Zander Galerie Paris is delighted to present new works by the artist Candida Höfer. This is the first time this selection of works will be exhibited. In her recent series Höfer continues to capture urban interiors with different installations of pendant light bulbs with electric cables that take the form of conceptual sculptures.

Candida Höfer, born in Eberswalde in 1944, is a representative of The Düsseldorf School of Photography and was a member of Bernd Becher’s inaugural class at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In 2002 the Cologne based artist participated in documenta 11, in the following year she exhibited at the German Pavilion during the Venice Biennale and is recognised as one of the most important female contemporary artists in Germany today.Informed by the notion of visual memory and an interest in how people shape their environment, her projects explore the aesthetics of photographed spaces. Since the early 1980s Höfer has photographed libraries, museums and opera houses with a respectful distance and arranged in meticulous compositions. The absence of people in these cultural institutions of preserving, representing, mediating, dwelling – properties that are also inherent to photography – allow the artist to focus attention on the inner structures of the spaces. The selection of works exhibited at Zander Galerie Paris has been curated by the artist herself, who was inspired by the small intimate space, creating a “special selection for a special place” by focussing on the element of light. The Paris exhibition features a spacious and minimal arrangement of photographs which are simultaneously minimal and driven by their structure and composition, reflecting the artist’s desire for abstraction. By focussing on power cables and light bulbs the artist explores how light influences the atmosphere and perception of spaces and how light sources can form their own arrangements.
