TARRAH KRAJNAK and SANTU MOFOKENG | Photography in Cologne

On Schönhauser Strasse, Galerie Thomas Zander directs the gaze beyond Cologne's horizon. The Peruvian conceptual artist Tarrah Krajnak is a guest on the first floor, while the South African Santu Mofokeng (1956–2020) is being exhibited on the second floor with his Billboards series (both until 24 March). His large-format black-and-white images show billboards along the streets of the townships.
To the unsuspecting observer, OMO's advertisement may seem like a bizarre contemporary sculpture. In fact, however, it reveals blatant imbalances. Because on closer inspection, Mofokeng has grasped the poverty from which it rises into the air. The dusty, littered side of the road, for example, which is populated by residents from the nearby townships and for whom OMO's washing promise must have been a bad joke.
