Galerie Thomas Zander is delighted to present new large-scale black and white photographs from Mitch Epstein’s most recent project Rocks and Clouds, a thematic continuation of his previous series New York Arbor. Images of vanishing clouds and ancient rocks in New York City as well as a portrait of a tree in the city investigate how nature exists in an urban environment and reflect on the significance of time. With impressive formal coherence Epstein captures the sculptural quality of the sky and the city’s bedrock within New York’s architecture: Giant cloud formations engulf a cargo ship, a massive erratic sits obstinately by the sidewalk. Rocks and clouds often mirror each other and this synthesis of what is above and below the horizon has reverberated in ancient Chinese painting as well as modern Land Art, both of which were inspirations for the series. The trees, as diverse and enduring as the city’s populace, have adapted to their urban surroundings. These two series invoke the human aspiration and inability to tame time and nature.

Mitch Epstein (born 1952 in Holyoke, Massachusetts) has gained renown over the last forty years for photographing the relations of society and landscape in the United States. A pioneer of colour photography in the contemporary art of the 1970s, Epstein first turned to black and white photographs in his series New York Arbor in 2012. Epstein’s photographs are collected by major international institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and Tate Modern in London. The artist was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for his multimedia project Family Business, and he received the Prix Pictet for his seminal series American Power. Epstein has published ten books, Rocks and Clouds is forthcoming with Steidl. During Gallery Weekend Berlin Andreas Murkudis presents the exhibition Free of Charge featuring a selection of Epstein’s colour photographs from the 1970s to the 2000s.
